Introduction: On the 04th of November 2023, Department of Food Science and Technology along with Food Science Society organized a visit to Verka milk plant in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The visit was attended by 35 students from our department and accompanying Faculty members were Dr. Anu Sharma and Prof. Manpreet Kaur. The purpose of the visit was to gain a better understanding of the milk processing and dairy products manufacturing process at the Verka facility and to learn more about the company's operations and commitment to quality.
The Verka Milk Plant in Amritsar is a renowned name in the dairy industry in India. It is a part of the Punjab State Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation Limited (MILKFED), which is responsible for the production, procurement, and distribution of milk and milk products in the state of Punjab. Verka has a strong reputation for its high-quality dairy products and its contribution to the growth of the dairy sector in Punjab.
Reception and Overview: Upon arrival at the Verka Milk Plant, we were greeted by the courteous and knowledgeable staff who guided us through the facility. We were given an informative presentation that highlighted the history, mission, and values of Verka. It was evident that Verka places a strong emphasis on quality, purity, and customer satisfaction.
Milk Processing: We had the opportunity to witness the milk processing operations. The plant receives fresh milk from dairy farmers across Punjab. The milk is first subjected to quality testing and pasteurization to ensure its safety and quality. The pasteurized milk is then separated into various components like cream and skim milk.
Dairy Product Manufacturing: Verka produces a wide range of dairy products, including various types of milk, ghee, butter, curd, paneer, and ice cream. We observed the production processes for these products, which were carried out in a highly automated and controlled environment. The emphasis on hygiene and quality control was evident at every step.
Packaging and Distribution: The packaging and distribution section of the plant was equally impressive. The dairy products are packaged using advanced machinery and materials that ensure product freshness and safety. We were also informed about the extensive distribution network that Verka has established to reach consumers across Punjab.
Quality Control and Testing: Verka places a strong emphasis on quality control and testing. We had the opportunity to visit the quality control laboratory, where highly trained professionals perform rigorous tests to ensure that the products meet the highest standards. This commitment to quality is one of the key reasons for Verka's success and trust among consumers.
Conclusion: Our visit to the Verka Milk Plant in Amritsar was highly informative and enlightening. It provided valuable insights into the operations of a leading dairy company in India and its dedication to quality, hygiene, and customer satisfaction.
