Sikh History and Research Centre came into being in 1931. Dr. Ganda Singh, a noted Sikh historian, who headed this department from 1930- 1947 through his indefatigable zeal and work of highest order, developed it into the chief and the first of its kind research centre in the fields of Sikh religion, Sikh philosophy, Sikh culture, Sikh politics and the history of Punjab by establishing a reference library and a gallery of thousands of manuscripts, rare books, portraits and painting of great historical significance and value. Some of these have been brought here from the museum in Britain and Lahore. Dr. Kirpal Singh's contribution also needs a special mention in this field. Prof. Sahib Singh, who served at college from 1929-1952, contributed in Sikh History Research Work through his various works which include Gurbani Viakaran, a textual grammar of the Guru Granth Sahib and 10 volumes of commentary of Guru Granth Sahib entitled Shri Guru Granth Sahib Darpan.

The museum houses rare and exclusive collections depicting various episodes in the Sikh History. It has a collection of 375 painting, 601 manuscripts, newspapers from 1904, 675 files books and Journals and has dexterously arranged the same in the form of Sikh History museum. Of these Manuscripts, 261 are in Persian & Urdu, 207 rare manuscripts in Punjabi .The manuscripts include 'Pothi Mehrban', Janam Sakhi of Guru Nanak Dev Ji by Mehrban ( 1651) and copied in 1928. Out of approximately 6397 books more 500 are a century old. There are 500 painting, Photographs, weapons of 17th and 18th century. Among the exclusive photographs, there are photographs of women who sacrificed their lives during the 1947 riots to save their honour and also pictures of skulls, alpine valley of old Punjab, Nanakana Sahib tragedy, Ragmala painting, Sikh rules and old doors of Golden Temple. Apart from this two old 'birs' of Guru Granth Sahib are also present in the museum. The old and rare weapons and coins are among the other treasures in this museum.

Research Scholars from various Universities, both from India and abroad visit the department every year. The people from the field of Punjabi literature, Sikh History and religious Studies have been able to collect valuable information from the department. The Management has commenced the laudible work of digitalization of manuscripts and old data of the department.

The Sikh History Research Centre was shifted to grand building built in the Campus of Khalsa College on 7th Feb. 2019 and the following five gallaries were established in the museum to convey knowledge about sikh spiritual and Martyr Personalities.
