The PG Department of Food Science and Technology organized an industrial visit to the Verka Milk Plant on October 22, 2024, with M.Sc., BFST, and B.Voc students. During the visit, the instructor provided detailed knowledge about the Verka Milk Plant, which was established in 1963 near Batala Road, Amritsar, Punjab. This plant produces a wide range of products, including pouch milk, ghee, milk powder, dahi, sweetened flavored milk (PIO), paneer, milk cake, panjiri, plain sweet and spiced lassi, and kheer. The equipment used in the plant was supplied by the United States of America, contributing to India's efforts to provide its people with a more nutritious diet that includes "nature's most perfect food." This visit aimed to educate students about the entire milk supply chain process, from the collection of raw milk from farmers to the industry's pricing of milk based on fat content and SNF (solids-not-fat). Additionally, students gained valuable knowledge about milk collection, quality control, the operation of processing units, machinery maintenance, CIP (clean in place), and milk packaging. The industrial visit was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, providing students with a hands-on understanding of industry operations.
