To increase the outreach for creating an environment, government of India envisages engagement of Gender Champions in all educational institutions across country. Khalsa College being co-educational institution believes in promoting gender equality, guaranteed by Article 15 of the constitution. Nearly 50 percent of the students and faculty members (Teaching and Non-teaching) are females. To safeguard the interest of girl students, the college has employed female security officers. The college provides very healthy and congenial environment, where girls are treated with dignity and respect. Gender Champions Club has been working in Khalsa College Amritsar under the dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. Mehal Singh since 2015-16. Dr. Sawraj Kaur, Associate Professor of Commerce and Dr. Parminder Singh, Assistant Professor of Punjabi are acting as nodal officers of the club. Thirty Six students from various departments of the college are its members. Manoj Kumar from Department of Fine Arts and Harmandeep Kaur from PG Department of Commerce and Business Administration have been selected as Champions Male and Female respectively. The main activities performed by the club during session 2016-17 are as under:
1. “An Interactive Workshop to Understand Gender Dimensions” was organised by Gender Champions Club on 10th Feb, 2017. Mr. Rishi Kochhar, Co-ordinator LYF India, Amritsar was the keynote Speaker. Manoj Kumar, Harmandeep Kaur, Shivdeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Sawan Kumar took active part in the workshop.
2. Gender Champions Club organised “Poster Competition and Documentary Presentation” on 6th April, 2017 to promote gender equality and sensitising students on gender issues. Dr. Raminder Kaur, Prof and Head, School of Punjabi Studies, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar was the Chief Guest. She distributed prizes to the winners of poster competition. Students from various departments of the college participated in competition. Amritpal Kaur from Physics Department; Harneet Kaur from Punjabi Department and Navneet Kaur from Computer Department were declared as winners of the competition. Documentaries prepared by a member of club, Harshivam Bawa, (Department of Journalism and Mass Communication) were also presented. Number of students including Sawan Kumar, Rameshpreet Kaur, Harmandeep Kaur, Manoj Kumar and Shivdeep Singh participated enthusiastically.
