About Department

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

• It is one of the oldest departments in the college.
• The graduate classes began in 1898. The post graduate classes started in 1928-29.

IMPORTANT PERSONALITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

• S. Gurbachan Singh Talib, a renowned scholar, was the  first college student to stand first in the province of Punjab in M.A.(English) in 1933.
• Prof.Sant Singh Sekhon, a well known writer in English, Punjabi and Urdu served as a lecturer in English in 1949.
• Prof. R. L. Ahuja, was the first  member of the Department of English in Khalsa College, Amritsar to complete Ph.D in English.
• Prof. Darshan Singh Maini, Prof. Emeritus was another well known scholar from the  Department.
• Principal Teja Singh, a well known scholar,  served the department of English from 1919-45.
• Mulk Raj Anand the iconic figure of  Indian Writings in English  was a student of the department.

• B.A .English (Honors)
• English is being taught as a  compulsory subject in B.A./B.Com/B.Sc (Med/N. Med/C.Sc./Eco)/ BBA/BA( Social Science) B.Com( Hons)
• Communication Skills subject is being taught in BCA/B.Sc IT/ Bio Tech/ B.Sc. Agri(Hn)/BFST/BJMC/B.Sc(Fashion Designing)
• We also offer B.A. (Functional English), Elective English to the students.
